Contractor Pre-Interview Questionnaire

A pre-interview questionnaire mentioned at the top of this chapter may look like this:

  1. Name
  2. Position applying for
  3. How did you hear about us?
  4. Employed or self-employed (Please include company name)
  5. If the company is licensed, ask for the license number.
  6. If the individual is licensed, ask for their license number.
  7. Size of the company in terms of employees or assets under management
  8. What’s the contractor’s title?
  9. The company you work for
  10. How many years with the company? How many years in this type of project?
  11. How would you describe your level of experience related to the position you’re looking for?
  12. How many companies have you worked for or owned in the last ten years?
  13. Please list any work references we may talk to.
  14. Please state if any of the references are based on the type of work or position you are applying for.
  15. Who handles the buying of materials whenever you take up a job? You or the owner?
  16. Are you insured, and could you provide proof of insurance as part of the application process?
  17. Does your insurance cover workman’s comp and general liability? Do you agree to furnish us with the same coverage information from your subcontractors before hiring?
  18. Do you have a portfolio of some of the projects you have worked on? Please share during our sit-down interview.
  19. Do you have any bids in progress now? How many?
  20. Are you always in charge of jobs at the sites?
  21. Have you used subcontractors? Do you pay them directly?
  22. Do you sign a release of liens or notarized affidavits before requesting payments?
  23. What are your average work hours per week on a project?
  24. What methods of payments do you normally accept?
  25. How much advance payment do you normally ask for? Is this negotiable?
  26. Have you filed bankruptcy, and if so, what year and names – personal or business?

Every investor can pick and choose which questions to include for their specific hiring situations. If the job is big, you may use all the questions. If it’s a small gig, use only those that are relevant to the project you are hiring for.
